OK I finally resolved this so here is how for anyone searching for this problem.
I was programming the bean on an iPad and trying to use it on a Mac Laptop. What I did not appreciate is that the machine that you are going to use the bean on needs the bean loader app running on it before the bean is recognised by the system. This is somewhat of a disappointment which pulls us back to the bad old days of in effect having to use a driver for each new device. Being a Mac user this is like turning back the clock a good 15 years, but I suppose Windows users have never got over the need to install drivers for everything so it is in their mind set.
So my fault, but maybe the instructions could have made that clearer. Yes if you follow the instructions to the letter for one OS it will work but I think you can see the problem.
Also it seems that Garage Band does not support MIDI input on the iPad so that is why it would not work on the same device as I at first had the bean loader.
